Ukko Elhob: I am an independent scholar interested in the societal frameworks of the Earth sciences (geosciences). I am associated with International Association for Promoting Geoethics (Rome, EU), the Ronin Institute for Independent Scholarship (Montclair, USA) and the Edgeryders Research Network (Brussels, EU). My research interests focus on the relationships of science and society, as perceived from a geoscience baseline. Outline: The Geosciences (Earth Sciences) provide and did provide context for my work. They refer to a range of applied and fundamental research fields, including engineering disciplines and related public and commercial undertakings. In a broad sense, geosciences are addressing the functioning of the geosphere and the appropriation of the abiotic resources of Earth. Within the last decade, scholarly thinking in geosciences has consolidated around the notion ‘geoethics’ to address both, the responsible behaviour of professionals in geosciences and the societal relevance of geosciences.
